The Road Not Taken

“I took the one less traveled by

And that has made all the difference.”

These lines from Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken, published in 1915, are perhaps one of the most (if not the most) misinterpreted lines in early, modern American poetry. If you just read these lines alone, they seem inspiring. For a long time, I was conveniently deceived by the false meaning, like many others. These lines alone narrate an entirely different story coming from someone who took a path full of possibilities and hardships, which ultimately turned out to be the very thing that differentiated the narrator from everyone else, “and that has made all the difference”.

To understand the true meaning, you must read the whole stanza, which goes like this:

"I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference."

The irony is that the narrator possibly made all the wrong choices. In retrospect, he’s lamenting his choices and to make himself feel better or to hide the truth from the people he’s narrating the story to, he’s making it look like he made the right choice, a choice which was difficult and unpopular and yet he dared to take that road which ultimately made all the difference.

How many times do we make the wrong choices in life, and only when we are left with a heap of regrets and lost time, do we realize that we should have taken the other road. We shouldn’t have taken the road less traveled by. When Robert Frost says that both the roads looked almost the same, it means we often look at things through our narrow tunnel vision. It becomes difficult to know what each road has to offer. Just as in the poem, sometimes, one of the roads may look grassy and greener, but once you set foot on it, it may turn out to be as weary and downtrodden as the other one. Then how are we supposed to know which path to take? Are we supposed to trust our intuition? That seems hardly fair. Why should we take pride should we make the right choice and blame ourselves when we don’t?

No wonder, free will has a profound place in all of literature. The conversation between Alice and the Cheshire Cat is another example where Alice comes to a fork in the road, and just as a simpleton, she is unable to decide which road she must take. Ironically, between a human and a cat, the cat turns out to be the wiser one when it says, if you don’t know which road to take, then it hardly matters which road you should go on.

Often in life, we face a similar fork in the road situation like Alice and Robert Frost. Only in retrospect can we understand the gravity of the choices we make. The critical question here is, how do we react when we realize we took the wrong path? Do we play the role of the fool and accept the consequences as they are, or do we live in our delusions like Don Quixote and fail to accept the reality and believe we chose the path for a greater cause, for all the right reasons, when in fact, it’s just another mediocre attempt to give meaning to our otherwise catastrophic journey. Do we put a mask of glory on our misfortunes, or do we wear our battle scars with a wistful pride?

To this I say, to each his own. I’d also say, do what you must, but do not lie to yourself. One should stay true to oneself. It’s never too late to break the pattern and take the other path, the one you left behind.

In the end, perhaps it’s not about glorifying the road we took or mourning the one we left behind. What matters is the honesty with which we evaluate our choices and the courage we muster to live with them or change course when we must. Life doesn’t always offer signposts or clarity in the moment, and the significance of our paths often only emerges in hindsight. But if there’s any wisdom to be drawn from Frost’s ambivalence, Alice’s confusion, or Don Quixote’s delusion, it’s this: don’t be afraid to question the narrative you tell yourself. The difference isn’t always made by the road less traveled. It’s made by how truthfully you walk it, how you accept the consequences of your choices, and how you react to it. You can be as arrogant as you wish to be and wear a blindfold, or you could show humility in your defeat, accept that the road not taken was perhaps the one you should have taken, and know that your flawed intelligence is what makes you who you are, a human. Maybe there's still a silver lining somewhere down the road, and it's worth holding on to.

I'll meet you there

Its a strange, fascinating world
I pass by everyday
Along the way to the infinities
of space and time
and beyond!
It's just another quiet thought
Simple!
Yet complicated and beguiling
Screaming, flickering, scribbling
Somewhere in the distance
In between the fleeting moments
of absurdity and curiosity
There's a pathway that leads me
beyond the borders of infallible dogmas
I'll meet you there

Chasing each other

If you didn't care when I was around
If I didn't care about you
And we were both running in circles
Trying to chase each other
Watching our shadows grow longer
Through the lens of our tear stained eyes
What would I do?

The truth beneath my soul

A multitude of tumbling thoughts
Spilling like a bleeding cut
Gasping and choking upon my fears
To beseech the truth
Under the shreds of my weathered soul
Deep down in the stigma of my corruptions
Culminated in the gravity of my own distress
Somewhere, deep down
Through the cracks in my bones and tears in my flesh
There must be fragments
And pieces
Of an untold, unspoken riddle
That no one could know
But myself
Beneath my tattered
And battered soul
There lies the truth
More beautiful than words can tell
That no one
Ever dared speak of
And one day I shall hope to find

She walks in the dark

She walks in the dark in world of night
With shadows behind her burning bright
So mellow, so tender, her voice that calls
And speak of troubles that may befall
In eyes so baffled, so deep and dark
She hides her beauty like a quark

In day that shines and lightens her face
And gleams with a mild enchanted grace
The wind when blows with a soft caress
To applaud the beauty of her tress
Her lips like clouds that stay awhile
In sky so curved when she turns to smile
She walks the sunset in her silver gown
Like diamond in a golden crown

Unattributed

Thinking of the days gone by
My careless thoughts shy away
From somewhere they don't belong

Fading away
Reaching out for what I behold
Why don't you look in the eyes
And try to understand
Its not so intricate as it seems

What if you look at me
And I'm not here
Am I the same person I've known for years
Or is it someone else in my head

I know sometimes I talk to myself
But don't you too?
When you rest in your solitude
When your mind seems to drift away
From their strange fudgy attitudes

I'm losing my way
In the midst of this hysteria
And if I could
I would
Instill the faith in my paranoid eyes
In my brown and mild eyes

After all these years
I'm still learning your strange ways
and the look in my eyes stays
If I'm not the same person I used to be
Do you think you are?

Memories from the past

As I free my mind
Go back to what I've done
Will it haunt me again?
Will there be any pain?

And if I want to come back
Help me open my eyes
Tell me how different is it from a dream?
What if I'm not even able to scream!

Closing my eyes to remember what I feel
I'm afraid of my own memories
Can't see a thing in this limitless haze
I'm wandering around in this confusing maze

As I enter subconscious of my unexplored mind
I feel like I'm spinning inside my own head
Tell me is it going to take me somewhere?
Will I ever be able to breathe the air?

Now I'm starting to feel
A rush of blood to my head
Trying to visualize my unknown past
I hope it's not too hard to make it last

Everything seems to be gone
Surrounded by shadows and lights around me
No exit door that I can find
I feel trapped inside my own mind

I see myself like reflections in the mirror
And I don't know what's real anymore
Tell me how long will I have to stay?
Should I ever see myself this way?

I feel afraid to be here and to go back
Haunted by images I see and words that I hear
My body is shaking from what I have to see
And I see blood spattered all around me

I'm holding a knife bathing in blood
I see all the faces that I put to sleep
I feel so afraid, I have to come back
And then all my visions start turning to black

Suddenly I wake up with sweat on my brow
It doesn't feel like a dream anymore
A killer that I was, a killer I'll always be
It was only myself that I didn't see

How to live again when I feel so hollow
So empty and bare knowing the answers
I realize now, when the door is locked and I have the keys
Some things are better left to lost memories

Sinking boat

Who will salvage this sinking boat
It's sinking down
Down below the depths
Of an ocean so dark
No stars above
to guide the way
No moodless words left to say
Every thought that ever bled
Everything I ever said
has come to naught
Here in the midst of
this blinded sea
Along with many those afloat
I'm drowning with this sinking boat

Insinuations

Beyond the insinuations
and aberrations
Around the corners
of my stranded universe
Comes the solemnity
in humble solitude
of my insinuated world

Self deception

Running around with blindfolded eyes
Wondering what could break the dream
In search of tranquility
And secrets to conceal
Shadows and silhouettes
As it may seem
Afraid to sense and feel

A random salvation

Inside their modern elementary minds
Words are softly spoken
With wobbling confusions
And troubled institutions
Solemnly writing
The depraved conclusions

Instigating responses
Emerging from a tainted society
With shoddy fragile foundations
And self manipulated invasions
Selfishly crawling
Waiting for a random salvation

The Trial

My Lord, I believe
All I wanted
Was Your Honor to see
But only if you were me
Then you'd agree

All of them with big homes
And fancy stylish cars
Living inside their narrow plastic jars
Should be residing behind the bars

And My Lord, I must say
Justice is all I desired
And honesty was all I required
But we are all tangled up and wired

In my defense I shall say
I'm rightfully convicted
For speaking the truth afflicted
often contradicted

In these times of deception
I've been secluded
When people are deluded
Your Honor included

With all due respect
If corruption is valid
Then My Lord, your very presence is invalid
And the laws are nothing but pallid

Our morals are subjectively dismantled
By hands of horror intricate lies
And hypocrite people in disguise
Who do not expect their congruent demise

My Lord, if I'm guilty for my humble intellect
I accept your verdict on my sentence
Indeed I committed a terrible offense
That's all I have to say in my defense

In name of freedom

The vengeance, vendetta and revenge of all
They all rose up upon one man's call
In dreams of freedom, they thought of revolution
In their minds, they called it evolution
A change that had to be brought
A fight that had to be fought
In name of freedom

The bloodshed inside the city walls
And the government who had to fall
With arms they resisted the civilians
Raging through a hundred thousand millions
Bombshells they dropped and shots they fired
Through guns of so-called agents they hired

No government could run by hands of corrupted
Their values, their minds, everything disrupted
The sleep was already prolonged enough
To free their minds, to break the cuffs
It was time to call it a day
But there was no easy way

And when the government confronted the ideas of a nation
They all shouted, it was a clear manifestation
That revolution was the only way
They could not let the government stay
The shackles had to be broken to think and to speak
They couldn't remain silent or stay weak

Once they stood up, they couldn't be let down
They couldn't let themselves drown
The thin line between war and peace
The anger within they had to release
They sacrificed what they had and all they could lose
It was something they had to choose
In name of freedom

Just as the nation stood up as One
The light was brighter streaming from the sun
The faded hopes were rekindled again
With lives and blood of those who were slain
Coming down from the skies of belief
They finally took a breath of relief

Then after the unison, they broke the walls
That kept them imprisoned inside the city halls
Justice prevailed, history written on a new page
The curtains brought down to a smothering age
Blood in the air and blood in the streets
They walked together, they walked in fleets
In name of freedom

With morning dew came something new
Freedom had arrived for lives of a Few
The music played, they sang their song
Everyone who joined sang along
And with this they shouted, they cried and laughed and screamed
A free country of their own they always dreamed
In name of freedom

Expiation

Walking past hallucinations
Paranoid and petrified
In dreams of ecstasy
Inside my subtle mind
Nothing behind

Thoughts meander and fly away
With images and words lagging behind
As I surrender to demons
And shadows inside of me
Setting me free

The waiting

Close your eyes
What would you feel
All yours to have
All yours to steal

Where does it come from
And where does it go
A soul so lonely
So desperate to go

Dreaming endless nights
Waking every day
Counting every hour
How long will it stay

Where does it come from
And where does it go
Do you even feel it
Or do you just let it go

Words are falling short
Too much to take in
How would you ever find
The world you want to break in

So sure are you
In your fuzzy disbelief
So happy are you
In your everlasting grief

Where does it come from
And where does it go
Where do you hide yourself
When you don't want to know

Mellow rain

Here comes November
Down from the memory lane
It's the same old November
November again
It's a rainy day,the sky is gray
And how I wish to dream again
When I walk in cold and mellow rain

Incomplete

I'm flying out of Earth tonight
Red light, green light
I'm ready for my flight
The time is right
And I want to fly
Across galaxies and stars
Uranus and Mars
No gravity here to pull me down
No air that I can breathe
And no earth beneath
I left my home so far behind
Some photographs and memories
Bouncing in my mind
When asteroids and comets
Pass by me
So many hidden miracles I see
Limits of time hold me no more
My wife is 60
I'm 24
And here I am
A million miles away
Sailing across the sea of black
A broken radio and some capsules to eat
No mornings and nights
And no one to greet
My journey will always be incomplete

Dreams unfurled

Little girl, little girl
Why are you sad
Run away, fly high
Open your eyes, see the world
Close your eyes
Hide away
Get around, get around
Catch the drams unfurled
Open your eyes, face the world
Close your eyes
Fade away
Little girl, little girl
Don't make me feel bad

Disappearing willows

It rains and rains
On the dark gallowing stains
The willows all dancing
Laughing, whispering, singing, swinging
Crying in the rain
Disappearing with the slain
Only the blood remains

Stranger again

Dark and hollow
Surrounded by demons
All around me
That you'll never see
Captivated by thoughts
That don't seem to rhyme
Falling away in time

It's a strange fascinating world
I come from everyday
Bewildered people travel by
Like clouds in the sky
Haunted by memories
Pouring down like rain
And I feel like a stranger again
